What the research shows
Aerobic exercise raises BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), a growth factor that stimulates neurogenesis in the hippocampus – the memory hub. A well-known Erickson et al. (2011) study showed that older adults who walked 40 minutes three times a week for a year had larger hippocampal volumes, while controls shrank at the normal rate of ageing.
Aerobic or strength?
Aerobic training has the strongest evidence for the fluid abilities measured by intelligence tests. Strength training also helps executive function. Best results come from combining both.
How much?
150 minutes of moderate activity per week is enough to show cognitive effects. A single 20-minute walk temporarily improves attention and working memory, measurable on a free IQ test taken right after.
