About IQTesta
Learn what IQTesta is, how our free non-verbal IQ test works, and why we're upfront about its limits. Not affiliated with Mensa; results are indicative, not a diagnosis.
What Is IQTesta?
IQTesta is a free, ad-supported website that offers a self-guided online IQ test. We built it so that anyone with an internet connection can take a short cognitive assessment out of curiosity, for casual comparison, or simply for fun, without paying a fee or creating an account. Because the site runs on advertising rather than subscriptions or paywalls, the core test will always remain free to take.
How Our Free Non-Verbal IQ Test Works
Our primary test is non-verbal, meaning it relies on visual pattern recognition rather than vocabulary or language-specific knowledge. You will be shown a series of shapes, grids, and sequences with one piece missing, and asked to choose the option that logically completes the pattern. This format is intentionally designed to reduce the influence of native-language skill, cultural background, or formal education on your result, so the test measures abstract reasoning and pattern recognition as directly as possible.
The test is timed and made up of a fixed set of questions presented in increasing order of difficulty. At the end, you receive an estimated score along with a short explanation of what that score means in context.
Our Approach to Accuracy and Honesty
We take the limitations of an unsupervised, online test seriously. Any test taken at home, without a trained examiner, standardized conditions, or a controlled testing environment, cannot match the rigor of a formal psychological evaluation. We would rather be upfront about this than exaggerate what a few minutes of pattern-matching questions can tell you about your cognitive abilities.
Our scoring model is built to be directionally useful, good for tracking your own performance over time or comparing casually with friends, rather than presented as a precise or certified measurement. We do not inflate scores to flatter users, and we do not claim credentials, certifications, or institutional affiliations that IQTesta does not have.
Understanding Your Score
IQ scores, including the estimate IQTesta provides, are generally reported on a scale with an average, or mean, of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, following a normal distribution, the familiar bell curve used throughout the field of psychometrics. This means most people score somewhere between 85 and 115, with fewer people scoring at the extremes in either direction. For reference, organizations such as Mensa typically require applicants to score at or above the 98th percentile on an accepted, standardized test to qualify for membership. We mention this only as general public knowledge about how IQ scales work, not as a claim that a score on IQTesta qualifies you for Mensa or any similar society.
