Working Memory and IQ: How They Connect

Working memory capacity is one of the strongest single predictors of fluid intelligence. Here's what working memory is, why it matters for IQ, and what the evidence says about training it.

When you solve a number series in your head, you are simultaneously holding several numbers, testing a hypothesis about the underlying rule and checking whether the next value fits. The mental workspace where all of that happens is called working memory, and it is tightly linked to how well people perform on almost every IQ test.

What working memory is

Working memory is the cognitive system that holds and manipulates information over seconds to a minute. It is different from long-term memory, which stores knowledge for years, and from sensory memory, which decays in milliseconds. A common model splits it into a phonological loop (words and sounds), a visuospatial sketchpad (images and spatial relationships) and a central executive that allocates attention.

The link to IQ

Meta-analyses show correlations of roughly 0.5–0.7 between working memory capacity and fluid intelligence – the ability to solve novel problems without prior knowledge. That makes it one of the strongest single-variable predictors of general intelligence. The reason is intuitive: number series and figure matrices require you to hold several elements active at once and compare them. The bigger your workspace, the longer and more complex the patterns you can test before losing the thread.

Can it be trained?

Programs like n-back and Cogmed improve performance on the trained task but rarely produce reliable gains on broader ability tests. Practical habits do more for most people: sleep enough, remove distractions when tackling demanding work, and regularly practise pattern-based reasoning under a light time limit.
